My experiences with wine have been bad. That's pretty much the best word to describe it. The best praise I've been able to give most things shoved at me is the award of being "drinkable."
But I know there's more out there.
Everyone seems to go to either side of the spectrum when making a non-wine drinker try something. They'll give me a super dry one, then a super sweet one. Neither tend to go over very well. They try to ask me what I like in a wine, but I have no idea what any of those descriptive words mean. I understand sweet, I have a basic knowledge that dry=not sweet, but that's about as far as it goes.
I want to be able to determine and describe what I want in a wine.
The only wine I've ever been pleased with was a Cab Blanc (I believe that's what they said it was, it was pink and lightly sweet) from a fancy scholarship dinner at the Summit in Christiansburg. No one would stop asking me if I wanted a drink during the happy hour so I finally begrudgingly took a glass to shut people up. It was delicious. So delicious I ended up getting drunk off it two seats down from the dean of engineering.
Happy hours only serve beer and wine.
This situation that happened at the scholarship dinner happens constantly in the workforce. Work happy hours happen constantly especially with Civil Engineering and construction. Most only serve beer and wine, even if there are mixed drinks it can be strange to order one. No one will let you have nothing, they all consider it their duty to bring you a glass of something, so I want to be able to pick out the least offensive something to sip on. Maybe even find something I actually want to drink.
